[Mar 2026] Five Mics Updates: GDC 2026, Digital Sim, Booster Boxes and more!

Announcement

March 17, 2026

Hey there! I’m Kayla, the Lead Product Designer for Five Mics: The Hip-Hop Trading Card Game. I’ve been with the team for ~3 years now, and it’s been a wild journey to say the least!

I have some incredible updates to share regarding:

  • My time at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) last week in the Bay Area

  • Feedback, insights, and next steps on our digital simulator

  • The Genesis booster boxes

  • Five Mics Central

Five Mics at GDC 2026

Last week, Five Mics had the opportunity to publicly showcase our digital simulator for the very first time during the Ctrl+Unite event.

Ctrl+Unite is an event co-hosted by AAPI in Gaming, Black in Gaming, and Latinx in Gaming, bringing together creators, developers, and players from diverse communities across the game industry.

For us, it was a meaningful space to present Five Mics. As a hip-hop inspired trading card game, seeing the game resonate with people from different backgrounds and experiences was especially exciting.

Moments like these remind us that games have the power to create connections across cultures and bring people together through shared curiosity and play.

This showcase also marked an important milestone for the project. The digital simulator has been an ongoing effort to translate the physical Five Mics trading card game into a digital environment where players can explore gameplay, test strategies, and learn the game more easily.

One of the most encouraging things we heard from players was that Five Mics feels easy to learn but deep in its dynamics. Both TCG newcomers and experienced players were able to quickly understand the flow of the game while still discovering interesting strategic interactions after a few rounds.

Events like this are especially valuable for us because they allow us to observe how players naturally approach the game. Watching someone encounter Five Mics for the first time, whether they are a longtime TCG player or completely new to the genre, provides insights that are difficult to capture through internal testing alone.

Feedback and Takeaways

Beyond gameplay impressions, we also received many thoughtful suggestions on improving the UX of the simulator.

Players shared helpful ideas on interactions such as: how cards are played, how hands are displayed while searching through decks, and how players inspect and read card details

Feedback like this is incredibly valuable to us. We believe great games are built not only by designers, but together with the communities that play them.

Another exciting takeaway from the event was seeing how the digital simulator helps accelerate learning and experimentation. It allows players to test interactions, explore strategies, and quickly understand the dynamics of the game.

We’re already taking notes and incorporating the feedback gathered at GDC into the next iteration of the simulator.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, played the game, and shared your thoughts with us. Your feedback helps shape the future of Five Mics!

The Genesis Booster Boxes and Five Mics Central

Booster boxes are officially in mass production right now!!

We got the final green light and confirmation that all our feedback from sample v2 can be incorporated, and so now we are in full swing!

Everything else — e.g. card sleeves, binders, playmats, etc. — have already been produced. Once all the booster boxes have been printed, then we will have an official ship date!!

In the meantime, the team and I have been working on building out Five Mics Centralwhich if you remember from our update a few months ago — is our our proprietary all-in-one player portal.

Right now, we have the deck builder ~90% done, and are now building out the other features — e.g. account authentication, event planner, etc.

If you made it this far, thank you for your support! We’re a small team, so it means a lot.
